The Gallery of the City of Plzen

The Gallery of the City of Plzen belongs among the most significant institutions of the type “kunsthalle“ in the Czech Republic. It disposes of representative exhibition spaces, besides halls with vaults in the underground and light rooms with a panelling above ground, a part of it is also a large tap-room and a courtyard.

The Gallery of the City of Plzen is focused on exhibitions of modern and contemporary Czech as well as foreign art, it issues catalogues, organizes cultural and educational actions in this conjunction. As for international projects, it realized e.g. exhibitions of Italian and Austrian post-war avant-garde or of the European informal graphic art. Its concentration is aimed in first place at the Central-European zone. It regularly organizes also exhibitions of leading Slovakian artists. It engages itself in the overall mapping of the modern art in terms of the Plzen region (e.g. the exhibitions “The Reception of Cubism in Plzen, “Colourism or the Dynamic Painting in Plzen“, accompanied with comprehensive catalogues).

The Theatre of Josef Kajetan Tyl

The Theatre of J. K. Tyl is a stable organism, still strengthening its position of a leading theatre scene in the Czech Republic. It offers a wide choice of theatre repertoirs starting from operas, dramas, musicals, operettas as far as to ballet.

The Theatre of Miroslav Hornicek

The Theatre of Miroslav Hornicek underwent a vast rebuilding, namely after the disastrous floods in the year 2002, and it represents a very attractive scene for theatre performances. The auditorium can hold 290 spectators. The premises of the theatre can be used also for firm actions, in relation to which it is possible to arrange for a theatre performance, for hostesses, for refreshments in the form of a rout and the like.

The Alfa Theatre

Plzen is a city with a long and famous marionetteering and puppeteering tradition, represented first of all by the PUPPET THEATRE OF FERIAL COMMUNITIES and by the name of the folk marionetteer and puppeteer Karel Novak, of “the father“ of the world-known marionettes Spejbl and Hurvinek, professor J. Skupa, and of his pupil – later the author of also world-famous puppet films – Jiri Trnka.

The Plzen Philharmonic Orchestra

The Plzen Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in the year 1946, its name being the Plzen Radio Orchestra then. Within the period of its existence it created a solid tradition and became renowned not only among the Czech orchestras, but it became a requested and much sought-for musical ensemble abroad as well. Besides giving concerts the Plzen Philharmonic Orchestra devotes itself, traditionally, also to recording for the Czech Radio as well as for foreign partners.

The Library of the City of Plzen

The Library creates and preserves funds of belles lettres as well as of specialist literature, periodicals and of other materials in the extent and composition corresponding to its function. It is building a regional fund of literature and information oriented on Plzen and its surroundings. It is deeper specialized in the literature of branches concerning social science, especially in relation to linguistics, literary history and culture in general.
